Millions Exposed By Saks, Lord & Taylor Data Breach

A data breach at Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor department-store chains have left millions of customers payment card details exposed. Hackers have stolen five million credit-card and debit-card records from the department-store chains. A New York-based cyber security firm known as Gemini Advisory LLC says the hackers are now selling customers payment and personal information on dark web forums.

The two chain stores are owned by Hudson’s Bay Co. and they have confirmed the data security breach which has exposed customer payment card data. A spokesman said there is no indication the data breach affected its e-commerce operations, its digital platforms such as Gilt Groupe, or Hudson's Bay department store chains in Canada.

The spokesman for Hudson's Bay Co. added, "We have identified the issue, and have taken steps to contain it." The company is also working with law enforcement and has offered customers free identity protection services. This includes credit monitoring so the company says they won't be liable for fraudulent charges.

Gemini Advisory has confirmed 125,000 cards have been listed for sale on the dark web, some were used as recently as last month, according to the company's chief technology officer Dmitry Chorine. The hacking group behind the breach is known as JokerStash Syndicate or Fin 7. They were able to gain access to customer details after breaking into the stores' point of sale systems.

Half of the United States consumers have had personal information stolen including driver's licenses last year during the Equifax Inc. breach. In 2014, 70 million target customers had personal data compromised after the company was breached. Home Depot Inc., Under Armour and Neiman Marcus Group Ltd., were also among companies targeted by major cyber attacks.
