The immigration crisis was the main issue which helped young Chancellor Mr Sebastian Kurz’s conservatives gain power during the elections last year by taking a hard line on the topic which he foresaw would be on peoples’ minds.
Mr Kurz was rewarded with strong gains and has formed a coalition with the far-right Freedom Party (FPO). A few months later, Chancellor Angela Merkel experienced during her own elections how the topic of immigration played out in Germany when her party lost a major part of their electorate to the far-right AfD.

In Austria, Mr Kurz is determined not to let this happen and therefore during a televised address yesterday, Austria’s right-wing government announced their plans to ban girls from wearing headscarves in kindergarten and primary schools.
Mr Kurz explained that he sees such headgear as a threat to Austrian mainstream culture from some Muslims: “Our goal is to confront any development of parallel societies in Austria. Girls wearing a headscarf in kindergarten or primary school is of course part of that.”
Back in 2015, at the height of the European migrant crisis, Austria took in around 90,000 asylum seekers, representing more than one percent of its population.

Mr Kurz was elected on a platform of toughening measures for immigrants and vowing to stop immigrants coming into Austria.
The Prime Minister continued: “What I can tell you is that it is a growing phenomenon. A few decades ago we did not have this in Austria and now it occurs primarily in Islamic kindergartens but also here and there in public establishments of Vienna and other cities.”
The Austrian government stated it would draw up a bill in the coming days which would be presented to parliament where Mr Kurz enjoys a comfortable majority.
The Muslim organisations in Austria have not yet reacted to the news.
