Germany - Merkel Party Politician Makes €2 Million Providing Hotel Rooms to Refugees

Commotion has arisen in Germany in the past week when it became known that a politician of the CDU party of Chancellor Angela Merkel, namely Board Member Ms Andrea Horitzky, had used a hotel-restaurant that she owned to accommodate refugees in Cologne, a major city in southern Germany.

In this manner, Ms Horitzky was paid some 35 Euro per person per night. According to calculations in the tabloid press, her total payment could thus range anywhere between 2 and 2.5 million Euro by now given that the housing contract runs until 2020 mininum and she now obtains some 32,000 Euro per month.

The current head of the Cologne CDU has referred the matter to Berlin as the scandal spread ever wider in the press.

Mr Bernd Petelkau: "I was not pleased because I was very surprised that this happened. As CDU last year we said that we wanted the refugees to get out of the hotels here."

Ms Andrea Horitzky did not get re-elected last year in Cologne for the state parliament as CDU lost a major part of its votes to the rightwing AfD.

Ms Horitzky defended her actions: “The hotel is my profession and therefore my private business. The other is my volunteer involvement in the CDU. I want to do something for the people of Cologne.”

Last year, before the elections, she stated when asked about the refugee policy: "It is important that the communities and cities receive the money the federal government gives them, and cities are often overwhelmed with the need to accommodate the many immigrants, so it must be ensured that those who are expected to be granted a right of residence, to be properly accommodated."
