Spain - ‘Wolf Pack’ Gang Rape Verdict Draws Mass Protests (Video)

Spain lives through its own #MeToo movement as more and more mass protests erupt at the sentencing of the ‘Wolf Pack’ (see our related coverage).

The ‘Wolf Pack’ or ‘Whatsapp Wolf Pack’ trial, called ‘La Manada’ in Spanish, refers to a group of 5 men who have raped / abused a teenage girl during the drunken aftermath of the ‘San Fermin’ bull run festivities in Pamplona and then posted videos of their abuse / rape online.

The following statistic may surprise you but officially some 20% of all Spanish women suffers abuse at the hands of their husbands. The unofficial figure might even be higher.

The Mediterranean country, though it has an attitude of sun, sea, and sand and always ‘mañana, mañana’ (we don’t have to do it today, we will do it tomorrow) comes with quite the temper and a full-blown macho-culture.

In fact, in Europe, the further you go north-west, the more equal the relationships between men and women tend to go, the more you go south or east, the less equal it becomes.

And thus, for the past year or so, as long as the ‘Wolf Pack’ trial went on, women stayed mostly silent, until yesterday evening that was, when the sentencing was announced.

The five men were sent to prison for 9 years, but the devil lied in the details. According to the judge, they were sentenced for ‘sexual abuse’, and not for ‘rape’, drawing a furious rebuke from women all around Spain who went out in great numbers to protest.

The calls of ‘Yo Si Te Creo’ (I believe you) and ‘No es abusio, Es Violencia’ (It ain’t abuse, it’s violence) greatly outnumbered the police presence in the streets of major Spanish cities, with many lefts to wonder how this will play out.
