In a story that couldn’t be more American if you tried (and is a certain screenplay hit after the court procedures will finish), Knoxville, Tennessee saw the start of a long-awaited trial this week, and already the public was in for a big surprise on the first day.
Back in 2016, Mr William Riley Gaul (now 19 years old) and Miss Emma Jane Walker (then 16) were a couple. He played on the high school football team, she was in the cheerleading squad. Both good looking, both beloved at school. But, as teens tend to do, Miss Walker broke up with him during an emotional night after a school party. He professed his love for her in a long post on social media but when she refused to take him back, he allegedly shot her multiple times in her bedroom using his grandfathers’ gun.

At the moment that young Mr Gaul was trying to rid himself of the evidence a few days after the murder for which he was the logical only suspect, he was arrested holding the gun in a bag, trying to dump it in the Tennessee River.
Now for the surprise. In the days between the alleged killing by Mr Gaul of Miss Walker, he visited his friends and tried to get their help to stash the gun. What he didn’t know, and what was shown immediately by the prosecution at the beginning of the trial, was that his ‘friends’ had already been approached by police forces who had asked them to secretly record Mr Gaul should he visit them. That recording was show on the first day of the trial.

In it, Mr Gaul, trying to get his buddies help him to stash the gun, can be heard saying: “I’m trusting you guys with my life because this is 70 years in jail if I’m convicted of something I didn’t do.”
He furthermore explained to them that he was too upset to be in mourning at that moment over the death of Miss Walker, saying: “I want to be upset but I can’t.”

This kid obviously needed help he did not get. There are many ways to kill a girlfriend. I am glad that he was caught before he made it a creative habit.
