There is growing consternation in France over the so-called ‘Fiche S’, the government watch list that tracks all those considered ‘hostile’ to the French state. Even though the official government figures reflect that only some 40% of all those carrying out the attacks were on the list, a journalist for France’s Europe 1 claimed yesterday that this figure is wrong as it uses skewed statistical data.
Ms Geraldine Woessner : “84% of the jihadists that carried out terror attacks in France since 2012 were either on a terror watch list France Belgium or had an international arrest warrant against them.”

Should you combine the watch lists of Belgium and France and take into account all attacks on those soils over the past six years, you get to a whopping 84%, meaning that 4 out of 5 terrorists committing attacks were under government surveillance but deemed ‘not at risk’.
There are therefore growing voices in both the French media and amongst French politicians to start arresting the 4,000 jihadists deemed ‘dangerous’ of the 20,000 to 40,000 person list (the official figure remains in dispute).

On Sunday already, National Front Leader Ms Marine Le Pen proposed as much when she said: “What purpose can this ‘fiche S’ serve if we don’t stop these time bombs from causing damage on French soil?”

Mr Laurent Wauquiez, who heads the centre-right Republicans of former President Sarkozy, also called upon the government of Mr Macron to stop with the “blindness and inaction”, but rather to bring in measures allowing for the possible internment of individuals considered the most dangerous.

Not only did the ‘Fiches S’ contain this weekend’s attacked in Paris, it also had Mr Amedy Coulibaly, the Islamist behind Île-de-France attacks in 2015, brothers Chérif and Saïd Kouachi, responsible for 2015 Charlie Hebdo massacre and Mr Redouane Lakdim who was behind the Trebes attacks in March 2018.
