A mountain lion is responsible for the death of a Seattle man who was mountain biking with a friend on Saturday morning. The two men were on a morning bike ride in the hills of the outskirts of Seattle, Washington. The attack is believed to be the second cougar fatality in the state in almost a century.

According to Seattle police, the cougar lunged at the man who survived the attack first, but when the second man started running away, the cat gave chase to him instead. The first man then jumped on his bike and rode for his life for two miles before finding cell service to call for help. When police got to the scene of the attack, they found the other cyclist had been killed, and the cougar was still standing over his body.
The cougar initially ran off when authorities arrived, but it was found in a tree and killed hours later. Rescuers could not retrieve the man's body until the giant man-eating cat had been subdued. The mountain lion also referred to as a puma, are found across South and Central America in both mountainous terrain and forests in the western United States.

Mountain lions are a protected species in the US, but populations must be controlled since the giant predators have no natural predators. Washington state allows hunters to kill 250 cougars a year in 50 designed areas. The first cyclist who survived the attack suffered minor injuries but is in stable condition in an area hospital.
Washington's bear and cougar specialist Rich Beausoleil said the attack was only the second fatality in the state in 94 years but said even that is "one too many."
