Australia - Queensland Fruit Grocer Slammed As ‘Racist’ For Showing Avocado Ripeness Chart

Charlie’s fruit market, a local grocer in Queensland, Australia, posted an Instagram message about the ripeness of avocados yesterday in which a typo appeared. Of course the internet wasn’t big enough for the overflow of people claiming he was being ‘racist.’

The meme shows cartoon a cartoonish drawing of an avocado as it goes through the ripening process, starting out fresh and hard, as you don’t want it, just yet till it’s ripe when it is supposedly perfect. But then on the last day it turns a dark and supposedly inedible shade. Anyone who likes avocados knows the feeling.

The caption underneath the drawing, which carried an unfortunate typo; sparker a major debate. It read: “We ALL know those feels …. Love our Avocados … hate our Abocados.”

Immediately the post was shared by hundreds of people online, with many of them instantly declaring Charlie’s fruit market as “racist” and “disgusting”. Within hours, there was a call for a boycott of the Brisbane-based business.

Mr Johnny Tabet, who owns Charlie’s, tried to rectify the mistake with a “heartfelt” apology message later on: “Our wonderful social media manager, who has been with us from the start, made a terrible typo last night on our post.”

“This is the same lady who was instrumental in us not celebrating Australia Day and respecting the traditional owners of this land. That’s why we believe her when she says this is a typo.”

“There is no way we would ever, EVER put up a racist joke. This is just not something we would ever do. We would never jeopardise our business like that or hurt people just because they are racially different. I cannot express this enough. We are not trying to cover up or hide anything. Racism is unacceptable! This was never meant to be a joke about the wonderful original owners of this land but a joke about how quickly avocados turn black.”

Clients of the store quickly jumped in, stating that people were overreacting and the ‘v’ and the ‘b’ keys were just next to each other on the keyboard.
