Burger King Russia: “Free Burgers If World Cup Player Impregnates You”

Burger King’s Russian division apologized for an ad that promised thousands of dollars and free burgers to any Russian woman who could get impregnated by a World cup player in order to get a ‘good genes’ player for the future national team.

The burger chain had announced the promotion on VK (a Russian social media equivalent of Facebook) where it offered local women some 3 million Russian roubles ($47,000) as well as a lifetime supply of Whoppers if they could ‘get impregnated by any football player competing in the World Cup’, preferably a ‘famous one’.

Many Russians reacted surprised, even disgusted. The commenters on social media failed to see the funny side of it and the fast food chain pulled the ad soon after.

In a statement, Burger King said, “We are sorry about the clearly offensive promotion that the team in Russia launched online.”

The fast-food chain explained that the offer “does not reflect our brand or our values and we are taking steps to ensure this type of activity does not happen again.”

The surprise over Burger King Russia’s actions comes only a few days after Ms Tamara Pletnyova, a Senior Member of the Russian parliament and head of the Family, Women and Children Affairs committee in the lower house, said in Russian media that it would be wise for single girls in Moscow to avoid sex with non-white foreign men as such behavior would leave them to become single moms with a mixed-race child.

Russian President Putin had reacted to that statement via his spokesman who declared that ‘Russian women can decide for themselves.’
