Details have emerged surrounding the mass shooting attack on the Maryland newspaper Capital Gazette Friday that reveal the gunman barricaded the exit and shot a person who tried to flee through the barricaded route. Officials told reporters the gunman, who was identified as 38-year-old Jarrod Ramos, is not cooperating with the investigation. Police also revealed that evidence was found at Ramos' home that indicates the attack on the Annapolis-based newspaper was carefully planned.

Ramos has been charged with five counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of five of the Capital Gazette workers he shot yesterday. He made an initial court appearance Friday morning via video link where he was arraigned on the charges. The judge ordered Ramos held without bail during his hearing Friday in an Anne Arundel County criminal court. The President offered his condolences Friday during a speech saying, "This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief. Journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job"

The attack unfolded Thursday around 12 p.m. when the gunman entered the Capital Gazette office and opened fire through a glass door. The shooter had barricaded an exit prior to the shooting and used smoke grenades to mask his attack causing authorities to misidentify them as potential explosives early in the investigation.

Prosecutor Wes Adams said, "We brought to the judge's attention the evidence that suggested a coordinated attack. The barricading of a back door, and the use of a tactical approach in the hunting down and shooting of the innocent victims." Adams added that Ramos "entered through the front door and worked his way through the office". Ramos had unsuccessfully sued the newspaper several years prior after they published his name and a criminal court appearance which was later dismissed.
Ramos also reportedly stalked and harassed one particular woman which led to a court order to get therapy in lieu of jail. The woman had even warned a former police official years ago that Ramos "will be your next mass shooter. He's a fucking nut job."
