Mexico - Landslide As Leftwing AMLO Wins Presidency, Trump Congratulates

As predicted for months, Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador was elected with at least 53% of the vote as new President of Mexico. The Mexican electoral commission confirmed the landslide result after which all his rivals conceded.

US President Donald Trump was one of the first to congratulate Mr. Obrador with his win. He stated: “Congratulations to Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on becoming the next President of Mexico. I look very much forward to working with him. There is much to be done that will benefit both the United States and Mexico!”

Furthermore, results showed that Mr. Obrador’s party Morena had won at least five of nine gubernatorial races, including the very important capital Mexico City which has just elected their first female mayor, Ms. Claudia Sheinbaum.

Mr. Lopez Obrador, who had been ahead in the polls for months, said during his victory speech that: “I will govern with rectitude and justice. I will not fail you. I will not disappoint you. I won’t betray the people.”

“We will listen to everyone. We will care for everyone. We will respect everyone. But we will give priority to the most humble and to the forgotten.”

One of the key tests for Mr. Obrador will be the negotiations with US President Donald Trump who wants to redraft the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) and has stated that he’ll build a wall along the US-Mexico border, something Mexicans are highly critical of.

Furthermore, the current White House Administration’s hard stance on illegal immigration (who are mostly entering via Mexico), and particularly the separation of migrant families at the US border which has been in the news lately, received widespread condemnation from Mexican voters.

During his victory speech, Mr. López Obrador stated: "We will pursue a relationship of friendship and co-operation with the United States, always rooted in mutual respect and in the defense of our fellow Mexicans who live and work honorably in that country."

3% is not a Landslide.

10% is overwhelming support

20+% is a landslide.

To 30241 - If your next opponent has only half your vote total I would indeed call that a landslide. There were 6 candidates. He had more than the other 5 combined.
