Germany - ‘Close Europe’s External Borders,’ Advises Austrian PM Kurz At CDU Conference

Whereas last year the German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the guest of honor at the conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) Erfurt’s annual gathering of the party's Thuringia state faction, this year the 3,300 members of the ruling German party had invited Austrian Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz as their keynote speaker.

Entering the speakers hall along to epic music which looked straight out of Lord of the Rings, Mr Kurz took in a standing ovation from the CDU parliamentary group in Thuringia as the words "A Europe that Protects" (the slogan is the official motto for Austria's sixth-month presidency of the Council of the European Union) filled the hall's huge screens.

Speaking of the need to secure Europe’s external borders, Mr Kurz spoke at length about "peace, freedom, security and prosperity," as to what needs to secure the future of a united EU.

To enthusiastic applause from the CDU crowd, the Austrian Prime Minister stated that "Europe's internal borders can't function if the external borders don't work."

Mr Kurz thus follows the line of Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban when it comes to the question of migration.

He has also been getting chummy with Germany's hard-line conservative interior minister, Mr Horst Seehofer, who heads the CDU's Bavarian sister party, the CSU, and who has the best change of staking a leadership contest against Ms Merkel.

The CDU's Mike Mohring said afterwards that Germany should take an example from what Mr Kurz has achieved in Austria in a cooperation with the rightwing parties, stating: "Anyone who wants to know how the modern 'people's party' can work must simply look to the work of the ÖVP under the leadership of Sebastian Kurz," whilst calling the 31-year-old's Austrian PM’s policies "refreshing."
