Current Swedish Prime Minister (and leader of the centre-left bloc) Mr Stefan Lofven had warned beforehand that the moderate parties have a “moral responsibility” to form a government and avoid the Sweden Democrats gaining any influence. Although his party remained the largest in parliament, they had their worst result in 100 years.
According to Mr Lofven, the Sweden Democrats had in the past “saluted Hitler and fanned the flames of racism.”

Neither the left or the centre-right block can attain a majority in parliament anymore. Just as in Germany, they will normally be obliged to make a ‘grand coalition’ in order to keep the Sweden Democrats out.
