Blac Chyna Blasted For Selling ‘Whitenicious’ Skin Whitener In Nigeria

US reality TV star Blac Chyna, famous for having dated one of Kim Kardashian’s family members, was trending on social media yesterday, but not for the reason you might expect. In fact, the reality TV-star was criticized for selling a skin-lightening cream in Nigeria.

Nigeria, the biggest country in Africa population wise with 190 million citizens, is a major market for any beauty product and although many in the Western world are calling for more diversity on TV and in magazines, if there is one thing African girls seem eager to want, it is whitening cream.

The model's new product, in partnership with a brand called Whitenicious, was announced on Instagram and many reacted rather surprised.

The Whitenicious x Blac Chyna Collection is described as an "illuminating and brightening cream" that "lightens without bleaching skin out".

The product’s homepage claims the product “brightens [and] lightens without bleaching skin out.”

A representative for Blac Chyna said that “she’s been using Whitenicious’ corrector for a few years to deal with her hyperpigmentation.”

Skin lightening products are banned in many parts of Europe and the US as they are known to cause medical scares, but in Africa those rules do not apply.

Blac Chyna claims her product doesn't contain any dangerous ingredients, but social media says she’s "exploiting" Nigeria's ‘colourism’ problem.

Colourism is the prejudice against people who have a darker skin tone or the preferential treatment of those who are of the same race but lighter-skinned. It is reported to be a major problem in Africa and Asia.

Skin-lightening products are not banned in Nigeria. According to official statistics of the World Health Organisation, 77% of women use regularly use some form of them.
