Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador have agreed to jointly fight poverty and thus reduce the number of illegal immigrants trying to flee to the United States. The Central American countries have signed a letter of intent on this issue during the swearing in ceremony of the new Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
“With a mandate from the people, today we begin the fourth transformation of Mexico. It may sound pretentious or exaggerated but today is not only the start of a new government but a change of political regime,” said the new 65-year-old leftwing nationalist.
New President López Obrador inherited an immediate foreign policy issue from his predecessor Mr Enrique Peña Nieto, namely what to do about the thousands of Central American migrants camping on the US-Mexico border.
Currently, some 10,000 migrants from several Central American nations are trying to apply for asylum in the US.

Most of them are now in the Mexican border town of Tijuana after a week-long hike. Last week, 500 of them tried to simultaneously storm the border.
During the midterm parliamentary elections, US President Trump talked a lot about the multiple "migrant caravans".
He also threatened to stop financial support to the Central American countries if they did not tackle the problem of illegal migration.
According to a press release from the Mexican government, a fund will now be created to help and create jobs. More details would be provided at the International Migration Conference on 10 and 11 December in Marrakech, Morocco.
Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are considered the most violent countries in the world, where (drug) gangs terrorize the local population. The police forces of those countries are often corrupt and fail to suppress the violence.
Mexican leftwing President Obrador vowed that his country would change and would tackle the immigration issue which leaves many of his countrymen fleeing to the northern neighbor.
