FL - Coast Guardsman Kills Wife, Son, Wounds Daughter Then Kills Self

A shocking family tragedy struck a home in Homestead, Florida where officials say a Coast Guardsman killed his wife, their 7-year-old son before also killing himself. He also wounded their 8-year-old daughter but she miraculously survived her father’s attack.

Miami-Dade police and Coast Guard officials identified the Guardsman involved in the murder-suicide as 44-year-old Petty Officer First Class John Presnar. Presnar in a moment of rage shot his 39-year-old wife, Gretchen, and their young children early Sunday at their home located south of Miami. Presnar then shot himself after killing his wife and son and wounding his daughter.

Police say the unthinkable tragedy was triggered only by an argument between the Presnar couple until it escalated quickly forcing the wife’s mother to ran from the home, presumably to call for help and rescue to diffuse the tension.

Unfortunately, by the time the authorities arrived, they found the bodies inside and the young girl wounded.

There is no clear word yet on the state of the wounded girl.

The authorities have yet to reveal what exactly triggered the argument. It is also not clear if Presnar was in a sober and stable condition at the time of his madness, or if he were suffering from any mental health challenge or condition.

The authorities have also decided not to reveal the named of the young children involved, including the girl as the lone survivor in the family.

Presnar had served in the Coast Guard since 2001 as an electronics technician. The Coast Guard has reacted to the heartbreaking and shocking tragedy with a statement, and said it is “deeply saddened by this tragedy and our hearts go out to the family members.”
