Just two days after a bomb exploded at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, China, three suspicious packages were found at Trump Tower. The NYPD bomb squad is on the scene at the Manhattan Trump Tower and is assisting in determining the nature of the threat. An employee of Trump Tower told officers that two suspicious packages were found in the lobby around 5 p.m.

Following a broader search, investigators found two more of the devices in other parts of the lobby. The suspicious objects were later determined to be unattended portable batteries and chargers. The bomb squad cleared the lobby as a precaution and bomb dogs sniffed the area and the suspicious devices but did not alert to any explosives.
NYPD closed off Fifth Avenue between East 56th and East 57th streets as the investigation unfolded. A broader search of the area turned up no additional suspicious items. Investigators say it is not clear where the items came from or what they were being used for. The investigation is continuing to determine if they contained any other instrumentation.

It is not clear if the objects were accidentally left behind by visitors or were planted by nefarious characters with dangerous motives. NYPD is asking all pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area. President Trump was not in his midtown tower at the time of the scare.
