"Suge" Knight Sentenced to 28 Years In Prison For 2015 Vehicle Murder

Marion Hugh "Suge" Knight has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the 2015 killing of a store owner. Knight is best known as an American recorder producer and former football player, he also co-founded Death Row Records which saw artists such as Dr. Dre breakthrough with their music in the early 1990's. Knight was in headlines in January of 2015 for killing his long-time friend 55-year-old Terry Carter. Knight ran over Carter and another man, 51-year-old actor Cle Sloan, not once but twice.

Sloan survived the attack and prosecutors say that Carter was not so fortunate and Knight intentionally stalked and murdered him. At the time of the attack, Knight was already out on bail for a separate robbery charge. The brutal killing was caught on surveillance video and was a key factor in the state's case against him. He can be seen driving a new model Ford F-150 Raptor pickup, one of the most powerful trucks in its class, and running over Sloan when he backs up, he then puts it in drive and runs over Sloan again this time striking Carter who was walking to check on Sloan.

The brutal attack captured on the surveillance video shows Knight's truck plow into Carter head on and drag him for several feet. The footage went viral and Knight was arrested and charged with one count of murder, one count of attempted murder, two counts of hit-and-run with an allegation that he committed a serious and violent felony while out on bail, according to the district attorney's office. Knight has been connected to controversies such as the slayings of rappers Tupac and Biggie.

The rap mogul has insisted that retired Compton Police officer Reggie Wright Jr., the man he hired as the top security chief at Death Row Records, killed Tupac while insisting that he was the true target of the 1996 shooting. Write Jr. and his father, Retired Sheriff Lieutenant Reginald Wright Sr. were arrested last year on drug trafficking charges.

The day after Knight ran over the men on January 29, 2015, Knight turned himself into the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Witnesses to the violent vehicular attack claim Knight followed the men to a burger stand parking lot after an argument that started on the set of "Straight Outta Compton" which was filming at the time. They also said the collision looked to be intentional on the part of Knight.

Defense attornies for Knight say that the collisions were made out of self-defense when one of the men approached his vehicle with a gun. They also argued that their client suffered from a brain tumor but that didn't stop the judge from giving him a $25 million bail. It was reduced a few months later to $10 million but Knight had fired his previous defense team by that time. In March of 2017, Knight was hospitalized from blood clots which had been ailing him over the last two years.

On September 21, Knight accepted a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleaded no contest to manslaughter. As part of the plea agreement, Knight would be sentenced to 28 years in prison. At 9:30 a.m. today, members of Carter's family addressed the Los Angeles County judge before he handed his sentence to Knight. Carter was described by his friends and family as a deeply devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Carter's daughter Crystal Carter told the court before sentencing that Knight is "a disgusting, selfish disgrace to the human species." Throughout the hearing, Knight just started forward blankly.

At 9:45 a.m. on Thursday, a judge handed "Suge" Knight a 28-year sentence four years after the fatal hit-and-run incident. The move allowed Knight to avoid a murder trial that was set to begin next week. Knight wore an orange jail attire and leg chains to his sentencing hearing with his 16th attorney in the case Albert Deblanc Jr. standing next to him. Knight will be around 80 by the time his 28-year sentence is complete.
